Q: Will learning guitar theory cramp
my musical style?
A: Learning guitar theory will not cramp your style or
hurt your creativity in any way. In fact, it will open up
many new doors for you. As you learn more about
music theory you will have more tools at your
disposal. It's up to you as to whether you use them
all the time or just some of the time. You can
basically flip a switch to turn them on, or off at will.
What you'll love most about understanding guitar
theory is the flexibility it gives you. Let's say you've
been playing guitar for a while but you're not too
knowledgeable about music theory. This means when
you sit down to write a new song, you'll have to
noodle around and go through the trial and error
process to come up with something you like. If you
get stuck, unfortunately you really are stuck—you'll
have to wait and mess around until you find
something that will work.
If you know guitar theory you have many, many more
options. You can still sit and noodle until you find
something you like, or you can decide to use the
power of guitar music theory to get you started. In
fact, you'll have the choice to sit down and write a
song completely based on the theory you know. Or
you can use theory just as the basis—you get the
basic song started and then start to experiment. You
could start to ask yourself "where should this chord
go?" or "where should this melody line or guitar solo
go?". Next you can ask yourself ""where could this
chord go?" or "where could this melody line or guitar
solo go?". Then you make your choice. You decide
what suits the song best. Do you want to go with this
option or that one, or that other one?
The important thing to realize is that guitar music
theory gives you many more options that you wouldn't
otherwise have. Depending on what you are doing
you get to decide if you want to go completely based
on "feel" or go purely based on theory.
Or you can use my favourite technique which is to use
a combination of the two. Whenever I write music I
use a combination of feel, inspiration, noodling and
guitar theory to get the best of both worlds. The
bottom line is the more guitar music theory you know,
the more choices you have. And that of course is a
great thing isn't it?
